SECRET TIPS TO CREATE A HIGHER CEILING

A design tip to make a space bigger is also one that is commonly overlooked. The standard ceiling height is 2.4m and it feels even smaller when it is in a compact space. Although you cannot physically raise the ceiling, you can give the illusion of height with these effective decorating tricks.

MATCHING CEILING PAINT COLOUR
Paint your ceiling the same or lighter than your wall colour. Having the same colour as your wall hides definition to where the wall and ceiling meet. Your eyes sees it as a continuous space. Having the colour lighter than wall makes it seem to float higher.

AVOID HANGING OBJECTS
Avoid hanging anything from the ceiling, even pendants. Your eye will discern where your ceiling is if something is hanging down from it. If this is unavoidable, make sure the object, i.e. a dining pendant, is proportionate to the space.

USE LOW FURNITURE
Create the visual illusion with low-backed furniture. This will put more space between your ceiling and furniture in your room. Sofas, armchairs, bed heads, dining chair and TV size are some items to consider. Do you really need a 65" TV?

USE DRAPES
Flowing floor-to-ceiling drapes will not only give you the dramatic effect but also a wall that keeps going up. Remember to keep the colour lighter to keep the airy look.

USE VERTICAL WALLPAPER
If using wallpaper, same rules apply as with the drapes. Use vertically oriented patterns to accentuate the height of the ceiling.

GALLERY HEIGHT ARTWORK
Ensure that your artwork is hung at the correct height. The most common decorating mistake is hanging pictures too high. Proper hanging height is 1.5 m from the centre of the picture. Also, smaller artwork will give you more visual wall space.
