Create an inviting home with lamps

Task lighting is one of the least considered things in the home but it is one of the most important elements. Our home is our sanctuary so it should be inviting. Ambient lighting like down lights are used in most homes. They do a great job of flooding the room with light but it is sometimes too much. Disadvantages are two fold - it casts unintentional shadows because it is mounted high and it uses more energy because it lights up areas you don't need lit.

Table and floor lamps are practical because they light up just certain areas. They also add a stylish decorative element that ties the room together. If you are starting with lamps, try in the lounge first and shut off the down lights. You will notice how inviting and soothing it will be.

Designer tip: always use warm white bulbs!
